Meet the MompreneurMy name is Melissa and I am the mother of four children and two grandchildren. When I unexpectedly lost my job that I’ve had for 10 years in the corporate world I did not know what I was going to do or who I was and I thought to myself at almost 50. What do I love to do and how can I turn that into a business. Ever since quarantine in 2020 I threw myself into learning everything there was to know about plants and flowers and gardening, and since then it has been a passion of mine, and I have really learned and continue to improve my knowledge and skills to turn it into a business. The best thing about my job that I tell people is there are no bad days. I wake up every day that I have a job to do and I just love doing it — whether it’s shopping for plants, designing planters, meeting with clients who love plants, or doing the actual installs. I just love everything about what I do.
What inspired you to start your business?I have always had somewhat of a passion for plants and flowers — I just didn’t have the knowledge to make it work. During quarantine I had a lot of time on my hands and I used it outside, learning, playing around, through trial and error and a lot of dead plants later. I had a corporate desk job for 10 years and was unexpectedly let go due to company-wide layoffs. I figured if I don’t give this a try now, I never will. I set a goal for myself for one year to see if I could succeed — and since starting I have expanded to all things plants.

Biggest challenge as a mom & business ownerBefore starting my business I typically worked a 9-to-5, so getting used to working on some weekends and having to miss out on certain things has been a little bit of a challenge — but my family is very understanding and we make it work.
